What is a Parrot Head?
The origin of the moniker Parrot Head goes all the way back to June 28, 1985. One of Jimmy Buffett's former Coral Reefer Band members, Timothy B. Schmit, coined the term "Parrot Head" at a concert held at the Timberwolf Amphitheater in Cincinnati, OH. Jimmy Buffett had noticed that an overwhelming amount of concertgoers were wearing tropical clothing and parrots on their heads, and the term was a play on "Dead Head." We're more PHun!
The first oPHicial club was started by Scott Nickerson in Atlanta in 1989 and has grown into a network of over 200 clubs around the U.S., plus international clubs based in Canada and Australia.
What is our Purpose?
The purpose of the organization is to promote the international network of Parrot Head charters as a humanitarian group sharing information and social activities for mutual benefit. The organization engages in activities that are charitable, educational and that promote the general welfare of the community. Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc. is a Not-For-Profit Corporation, whose purpose is to assist in community and environmental concerns and provide a variety of social activities for people who are interested in the music of Jimmy Buffett and the tropical lifestyle he personifies.
The Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club serves the greater Sarasota and Manatee county area. Our members are often members of other clubs as well, because there are about 20 in the state of Florida and we all co-mingle! We love to Party with a Purpose. We have social meetings the last Thursday of the month, many special events, and the public is welcome to come see what we are about!
We support the Alzheimer's Association, Save the Manatee, Save our Seabirds, Big Cat Habitat, Safe Place 2B, and area food banks and pet shelters.
